Advancing Generative AI Skills at NASA’s Glenn Research Center

To equip researchers and engineers with the knowledge and skills necessary for leveraging generative AI in various tasks, SaNDAI Global designed a comprehensive instructor-led training program for 25 participants at NASA’s Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, OH. This program aimed to enhance the participants’ capabilities in using generative AI for document summarization, content creation, code assistance, and
research support, aligning with NASA’s mission of driving innovation through advanced technology.

The problems we needed to solve

The rapid evolution of generative AI presents both opportunities and challenges for research professionals. NASA’s team required a deep understanding of AI technologies that generate text, images, and data, enabling them to utilize these tools effectively in their roles. The challenge was to deliver an engaging and practical training program that not only covered foundational AI concepts but also demonstrated real-world applications relevant to their work at NASA.

The solutions we proposed

We delivered a flipped-classroom training program combining virtual support, workshops, and in-person sessions. The training focused on foundational concepts, practical tools, and ethical considerations, equipping participants with essential Gen AI skills to enhance their work.

What have we achieved

The training program significantly improved participants’ knowledge and confidence in using generative AI, with 90% of attendees reporting enhanced skills in AI applications and prompt engineering. This initiative has positioned NASA’s Glenn Research Center at the cutting edge of AI-driven research, enabling researchers and engineers to work more efficiently and creatively.

Comprehensive Training Curriculum

We developed a robust curriculum that included key Gen AI topics such as prompt engineering, project lifecycle, and ethical use of AI. The program consisted of 24 hours of virtual support and in- person training, enabling participants to understand and apply Gen AI concepts effectively in their day-to-day tasks.

Flipped-Classroom Approach

The flipped-classroom model allowed participants to engage with course materials before each session, maximizing in-person learning through practical application and problem-solving. This approach ensured that the training was interactive and directly relevant to the needs of the participants.

Hands-On Workshops & Role-Playing

Through hands-on workshops and role-playing exercises, participants gained practical experience in using Gen AI tools. These activities focused on real- world applications, such as document summarization and code assistance, enabling participants to immediately see the impact of their new skills.

Ethics and Responsible AI Use

The training emphasized the importance of ethical considerations in AI, including discussions on risks and responsible use. This component was crucial in ensuring that NASA professionals not only gained technical skills but also understood the broader implications of AI technologies.

What this means going forward

SaNDAI Global’s Gen AI training program exemplifies our commitment to advancing scientific and engineering capabilities through innovative education. By equipping NASA professionals with essential Gen AI skills, we are driving forward a new era of research and development, empowering teams to tackle complex challenges with advanced AI tools.
